To celebrate the season, we’re finishing with one of our favourites  a beautifully spiced, wonderfully delicious Gingerbread Ornament Recipe. It fills the kitchen with the smell of Christmas and makes the perfect little treat to hang on the tree… if they last that long!

Gingerbread Ornaments

Gingerbread Ornaments

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls

  • Whisk

  • Wooden spoon or electric mixer

  • Rolling pin

  • Cookie cutters (festive shapes)

  • Baking trays

  • Parchment paper

  • Drinking straw (for making hanging holes)

  • Small pot or microwave-safe bowl (to melt chocolate)

  • Cooling rack

Ingredients

  • Dry:

  • 360 g Gem plain flour

  • 1 tbsp ground ginger

  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon

  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg

  • ¼ tsp ground cloves

  • 150 g Gem soft dark brown sugar

  • ½ tsp salt

  • Wet:

  • 170 g butter, softened

  • 1 large egg

  • 4 tbsp treacle

  • 4 tbsp golden syrup

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • To Decorate:

  • 200 g Gem chocolate chips (for melting)

  • Festive sprinkles

Instructions

Make the Dough

1. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, spices, and salt.
2. In another bowl, beat the butter, egg, treacle, golden syrup, and vanilla until smooth.
3. Gradually add the wet ingredients into the dry until a soft dough forms.
4. Divide the dough into two discs, wrap, and pop into the freezer for 10 minutes while we tidy up.

Roll & Cut

5. Preheat the oven to 160°C fan.
6. Lightly flour your table and rolling pin.
7. Gently knead the chilled dough.
8. Roll the dough to ¼ inch thickness.
9. Cut out festive shapes using cookie cutters.
10. Use a drinking straw to make a small hole at the top for hanging.

Bake

11. Bake for 15–20 minutes (a little longer for bigger ornaments).
12. Let the gingerbread cool completely so they become firm and sturdy.
13. Dip the tops into melted GEM chocolate chips and decorate with festive sprinkles.
14. Hang your gingerbread ornaments on the tree with a ribbon, or wrap them up as sweet homemade gifts!
