Summer and Barbecues go hand in hand and there’s nothing better than having family and friends over for a BBQ on a sunny day!

Unfortunately, Irish weather can be a little hit or miss which can make planning a little difficult but one thing we can guarantee is a lip-licking tangy BBQ sauce to go with this scrumptious oven-cooked Burger, made with love by One Yummy Mummy using Gem Muscovado Sugar… it’s hands down so much better than any shop-bought version!

This dish is fantastically simple and way more satisfying than a Burger from the freezer or Takeaway!

Now that schools are out for Summer why not get the kids to make this with you – Try this Recipe now! Share it on Social Media and don’t forget to tag Gem (@gembakes.ie) and One Yummy Mummy!

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl

  • Small saucepan

  • Baking tray

  • Wooden spoon

Ingredients

  • For the beef burgers:

  • 800g beef mince

  • A good splash of Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • Salt and pepper (to season)

  • For the barbecue sauce:

  • 1 tablespoon tomato puree

  • 200g passata

  • 80g Gem dark muscovado sugar

  • A good shake of Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar

  • Salt and pepper (to season)

  • To serve:

  • 4 burger buns

  • 4 slices of smoked or plain cheese

  • 1 head of iceberg lettuce

Instructions

1
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees/160 degrees fan/gas mark 4.
2
Add the beef mince, garlic powder, onion powder and Worcestershire sauce to the bowl. Add a sprinkle of salt and pepper to season.
3
Get your (clean!) hands into the bowl and give everything a good mix.
4
Decide whether you want to make 4 larger or 8 smaller burgers. If you choose 4, you will just be including 1 burger in a bun. If you choose 8, you could include 2 in each bun to build a double cheeseburger. Once you’ve decided, divide the meat mixture into 4 or 8. Roll each section into a ball.
5
On the baking tray, flatten the burgers down into patties.
6
Place the baking tray on the middle shelf of the oven. Cook for 25 minutes, flipping the burgers after 10 minutes.
7
While the burgers are cooking, make your BBQ sauce by adding all the ingredients to a small saucepan. Mix well, then allow the sauce to simmer on a low heat, stirring regularly.
8
Wash the lettuce and tomatoes. Tear off as many lettuce leaves as you need. Use a child-safe knife to cut the tomatoes into slices.
9
5 minutes before the end of the cooking time, add the burger buns to the oven to toast. Place a slice of cheese on each of the burgers (or on 4 of them if you are cooking 8).
10
When the melty, cheesy burgers are cooked, dress them in a toasted bun on a bed of lettuce and tomato. Drizzle with your delicious barbecue sauce and enjoy!
